Birds of Rockport

I went to the Rockport beach today
saw a hot pink fluorescent bikinay
with tattoos runnin’ up and down her leg

and the seagulls struttin’ with their legs on backwards
with their sideways eyes on my saltine crackers
so I threw my snack at them and
they took it away

the sky was gray and the water too
that fluorescent bikini
made a nuclear view
I can tell my Rockport getaway is long overdue

now I know you
and you know me too
our love ain’t up for critical review

now the seagulls with the crackers
had to go and tell the others
they brought back their friends to
come sit among us
so now the little moochers are here to stay

you goofy bird beauties with your black face masks
red lipstick and white eyeliner
white suits and black wingtips
never looked finer

four girls backed into us flying their tiny plastic kites
with sun burnt legs like bright pink elastic tights
girls kites and crackers
what’s a seagull to do?

now I show you
how to help me through
tangled up in kite strings
what’s a girl to do?

the peacock at the Rockport trailer park
meows like a cat not like some kind of lark
draggin’ his tail feathers in the dirt

while washing dishes at the Oak Park kitchen sink
through the venetian blinds I see an owl
perched upon the big oak tree

the kids run outside jump right up off the couch
to test my claim see what’s the fuss about
he’s fake
on the lookout
no little birds allowed

now you show me
how to help you through
I can see you draggin’ your
tail feathers too
