One Good Reason when name calling and throwing sticks is not the solution and every single person you know is waiting on a train try to find one good reason to challenge your twisted nerve before you think about climbing that platform about in the high rain how to keep warm about trying to find out why you were born about looking for a teacup so we can ride out the storm when the view from the wall is distress and disorder and the voices of the earth are lost in a screaming refrain try to find one good reason to challenge your twisted nerve before you think about climbing that platform about in the high rain how to keep warm about trying to find out why you were born about looking for a teacup so we can ride out the storm

Forever Raiders the road continues yet straight on its sphere a way is past e’re approaching e’re near in days torn by spires on this flat terrain bare horizon calls with its fullest refrain of constancy railing and chorus beneath textured soil clouds on horizon’s wreath in symphony rather than within a dearth cloud flurries pull velvet hooves easily on this earth pushed and urged I follow pulled and led I lead they approach from all sides these raiders of yore bearing fro and back in apparel of war with exceptional rhythm in a steady stream approaching calm presence disguised as a dream pushed and urged I follow pulled and led I lead muted and waiting, a woodwind without its reed

Happy String 03:10
Happy String he bowed her earlobe lightly to see what note might sing the ribbon from her hair fell free and crowned his knee a king the bow untied was now so vain a heavy useless wing and the snow outside don’t mean a thing so the bow upon her earlobe to see what note might sing sang a song upon its knee and her head began to swing the note fell from her mouth and sang a horsehair happy string and the snow outside don’t mean a thing

Driving Memory so I see a landscape tan in color within whisps of grass like hairs on a boar’s skin wandering the country available to drive Emporia, Wichita, or Waverly goodbye tunes from the radio play reggae tip toes from one fence post to the next keys in ionic fashion stacks of notes latch on to words and tip the scales upward sorting tales of compassion sun rays meet the grain rows with low angled light skimming right through the foothills of Missouri in these stanzas except that we’re in Kansas snow patches cloud batches plateaus and rock wedges the land your belief is so strong frozen pond where cows don’t drink or stand trees in lakes up to their ears like Danielle on her walk into the pool their trunks disappear curling trees split at the knees burdened by snow’s weight make cursive symbols silhouette timbers spelling and bound to navigate
5.
Sand 03:56
Sand I walk like I don’t know there’s a hole in my shoe I feel it everywhere I go there’s a hole in my foot too what happened to my shoe? what other part of me can it happen to too? where I go and where I been are the same unless I duck down here to the side where I can reclaim the ocean deep appears in my mind a trail of sand is all I leave behind sand on sand sand on sand sand on sand
6.
Tabernacle 04:08
Tabernacle old Lottie lies in an aureole of light her small stillness waiting wrinkled and spare and I am painting my old kitchen white stretching and swaying to gain greater height brushing and rolling layer upon layer old Lottie lies in an aureole of light a shroud of sheets like archangels in flight hovers near while her eyes still burn and stare and I am painting my old kitchen white rushing to hold back inevitable night in this rising tabernacle of prayer old Lottie lies in an aureole of light her children surround her with love and fright memorizing her lined face in despair and I am painting my old kitchen white a pale sun illumines this hallowed rite casting pearls on her shimmer of hair old Lottie lies in an aureole of light and I am painting my old kitchen white

Oh Well 03:42
Oh Well love is abstract these windows are cracked the baseboards are quaking and grieving I went to the well and into it fell a scream can be so deceiving go go go go to the well oh well this echo will fade the sound a charade of something I’m not really hearing my shoes walk in wounds my hands are harpoons land or sea this fog won’t be clearing go go go go to the well oh well that fool on the hill didn’t live there before he’s living there still a stain marks his door his castle beset all blind will and threat a hollow tribune don’t follow his tune go go go go to the well I said well well well go to the well go to the well

Paper Kisses 03:48
Paper Kisses I remember there was a time you brought me flowers all the time like a lizard you like the rocks playing your guitar with music that knocks away those clocks I remember there was a time your kisses came in showers all the time like a lizard you like the rocks playing your guitar with music that knocks away those clocks romance of being a human being this in you I’ll always be seeing paper kisses you like the look of my affection sealed in your book paper kisses sealed in my book paper kisses sealed in my book paper kisses sealed in my book I remember we had a rhyme you rode your tune and I wrote mine like a lizard you like the rocks playing your guitar with music that knocks away those clocks

Rod of Iron 04:20
Rod of Iron you can touch me any time you want it’s a power you have that surely you flaunt I’m afraid afraid that you think this movement in the street is something that is like a parade I’m afraid you’re going to touch me with your rod of iron kept in a plywood box lined with the news you say this time things will be different a barrel of blessings will flow and from here on out our fingers they’ll just know but why must you pierce my side with your rod of iron I feel the warmth of your body when we climb into bed I know every shadow and contour and can see them all in my head the spell of your spent powder whispers to me in my dreams I awake and so tenderly hold my rod of iron I’m afraid you’re going to touch me with your rod of iron why must you pierce my side with your rod of iron

Birds of Rockport I went to the Rockport beach today saw a hot pink fluorescent bikinay with tattoos runnin’ up and down her leg and the seagulls struttin’ with their legs on backwards with their sideways eyes on my saltine crackers so I threw my snack at them and they took it away the sky was gray and the water too that fluorescent bikini made a nuclear view I can tell my Rockport getaway is long overdue now I know you and you know me too our love ain’t up for critical review now the seagulls with the crackers had to go and tell the others they brought back their friends to come sit among us so now the little moochers are here to stay you goofy bird beauties with your black face masks red lipstick and white eyeliner white suits and black wingtips never looked finer four girls backed into us flying their tiny plastic kites with sun burnt legs like bright pink elastic tights girls kites and crackers what’s a seagull to do? now I show you how to help me through tangled up in kite strings what’s a girl to do? the peacock at the Rockport trailer park meows like a cat not like some kind of lark draggin’ his tail feathers in the dirt while washing dishes at the Oak Park kitchen sink through the venetian blinds I see an owl perched upon the big oak tree the kids run outside jump right up off the couch to test my claim see what’s the fuss about he’s fake on the lookout no little birds allowed now you show me how to help you through I can see you draggin’ your tail feathers too

Poplars and Thistles no columbine or roses here refresh the lonely longing instilled upon this day lingering held in a simple mesh falling through patterns as we do but sway no roadside flowers greet this Sunday we’ve torn the edges along the way awed by long rivers black tar roadways each hungered by the stains along the way looking only forward never sideways sensing glances from the other yet strained no roadside flowers greet this Sunday we’ve torn the edges along the way as pines give way to very blatant poplars we set aside the scant thought of thistles and try to forget scent of tar aiming toward flatlands of moss and missiles no roadside flowers greet this Sunday we’ve torn the edges along the way

about

Released October 6, 2020, Wolverton’s second full-length, full band album, Paper Kisses. With fifteen songs, the album is representative of live sets the band has played for the past couple of years. Produced and recorded live by Joe Reyes, with additional instruments by the band, BJ Cole and Kim Mackenzie.

“Cosmic American Music,” a term with two meanings, is the celestial perspective of the American musical tradition, a synthesis of Folk, Blues, Country and Rock, and it is also cosmic in a more ineffable way—it understands America, its mysteries, wonders, tragedies, and ghosts. Wolverton’s music easily resides in Cosmic American Music like blades of grass floating down a river. On their second album, Paper Kisses, Wolverton crafts an elusive synergy of opposites. These songs are nostalgic but arch, serene but gently confounding—they snake and zag until one is happily lost in a canyon at sunset. Echoes abound on this album: you can hear the pastoral lilt of early 70s Grateful Dead, the breezy chamber folk melodies of Fairport Convention, one song even seamlessly splices in sections of Prince’s When Doves Cry. It all seems in its right place. “Train is coming around the bend.” Hop on and let it take you past the vanishing point of the horizon.

--- Neil Fauerso

Paper Kisses is a beautiful, weird and fun combination of songs to listen to and dream of a new future — or perhaps a look into a wild and adventurous past…the style and delivery is uniquely Wolverton….with a softness that meets sharp words cutting like razorblades…a surprising range of emotion and a large variety of styles. Each song expresses a different longing, in One Good Reason it’s a longing for answers and in Driving Memory the longing of a time traveling the roads of America. The lyrics seem familiar until one listens closely, catching sometimes a rather darker meaning that seems to float on the airy tunes of the voices and instruments. The song Sand starts out with a toe-tapping lighthearted melody until the words follow, “I walk like I don’t know there’s a hole in my shoe ... the ocean deep appears in my mind ... a trail of sand is all I leave behind.”

--- Christina Stock, Roswell Daily Record

"Standout tracks for me are ‘Tabernacle’, infused with mellotron and octave fuzz guitar. The barroom piano led ‘Oh Well’. The lilting title track ‘Paper Kisses’. ‘Birds Of Rockport.' ‘Poplars And Thistles’ which has some dirty guitar from Jack Sputter. Also of note is the surprising arrangement of ‘Shakin’ Grape Jelly’, incorporating some lyrics from Prince’s 'When Doves Cry’, it’s a purple dream where the world is a big fat bowl of shakin’ grape jelly."
